Kingdom Tattoo – (678)-732-0811

Kingdom Tattoo artist Ryan Weaver, after a few small pieces many years ago, became my go to artist. And with good reason too. His unique talent with fine lines, his amazing traditional work, clean writing and fonts and the graceful strokes on the black and grey shading left an impression on me when I first started coming to Timeless. But it’s a new day for my artist. After ten years with Cap Szumski and Timeless Tattoo he is venturing out and opening his own doors in the tattoo world with “Kingdom Tattoo” in Decatur, GA. With the opening of his new shop it was only right to do an interview and give my readers an inside look with the man who helped bring my emotions and my stories to the surface!
First and foremost I just want to say congratulations on the opening of your new Shop, Kingdom Tattoo. I’ve been getting ink done by you for a couple years now and it’s really great to see you bring the world of tattooing to enthusiasts under your own title. Thanks Mike. I really appreciate that.
Let’s start by learning more about you as an artist. Give us a little background on why you started tattooing and your entrance into the tattoo world? Ok, it all started when I began getting tattooed. The more I got tattooed, the more I became interested in the process. I found myself sometimes getting tattooed every week for months at a time just to re-experience the whole process. I loved it! Every bit of it. The sounds, the smells, and of course, the tattoos! After getting way too many tattoos in a short period of time and after hanging out at the shop for way too long, my tattooist, Rob Knight noticed my genuine interest and asked if I wanted to apprentice. So, I did.
As with any art form, every artist has their own style and technique. What form of tattooing best defines you and what style do you enjoy doing the most? If you know my work, you can spot my style: My work is bold and clean. I really enjoy everything from the American and Japanese traditional styles to the soft black and gray.
Who did you apprentice under and how much of an influence did they have on your style and your work today? I apprenticed under Rob Knight and Gary Yoxen. Up until this point I was still working with Rob. He’s got an amazing handle on fine line black and gray. He has defiantly had a heavy influence with me in that department.
I first started coming to you when you were working at Timeless Tattoo. You were working under world-renowned artist, Cap Szumski for many years. What brought you to open up your own shop and why the name “Kingdom Tattoo”? Big question! Might be hard to fully unpack that one, but let’s try. I’ve had the greatest possible experience working for Cap. I’ve learned so much from everyone at Timeless. The bonds that I have with those guys will never be broken. With that said, there’s a time for everything and my time is now. As far as the name Kingdom goes, that’s in reference to God’s Kingdom. I can only point you to the book that influenced me and changed my perception of our time here. That book is by N. T. Wright and is titled: “How God became King.”
With that being said, I’ve sat in your chair quite a few times. I’ve even brought my mother in to get touched up by you. What is it about your work that keeps you with a steady clientele? I think it’s a combination of the quality of my work and how I interact with my clients. My profession is customer driven. Customer service is top priority with me and my staff. I want to accomplish my clients vision by applying it to the tried and true methods and fundamentals of good tattooing. The two together, client vision with my method, will produce a tattoo that will look great for a life time. And that makes for a very happy client.
What’s the craziest tattoo story you can share with our StupidDope Readers? Ha! I’ve seen plenty! Probably the most ridiculous thing is when a couple come in and while the girl is getting tattooed the boyfriend or husband passes out! That really happens!
Finally, Are you taking Walk-Ins at Kingdom Tattoo? What is the best way to book an appointment with Ryan Weaver? I am taking walk-ins. The best way to set up an appointment is to call the shop and check the schedule at (678)-732-0811.
